Rangatahi Tumeke

Description

Rangatahi Tumeke

This outdoor program was created in 2013 to provide Rangatahi with traditional food gathering practices and a connection to the Whenua Ngahere and Moana. Included are activities such as trout fishing, kayaking, Waka Ama, tenting, tree planting and orienteering. Rangatahi aged between 12-17 years are welcomed onto Te Rau Aroha Marae in Bluff and then taken on a journey into the Catlins for five days of outdoor pursuits. Our base is at the Tautuku Outdoor Adventure Lodge. Thanks to the Ngāi Tahu Fund and Te Pūtahitanga we have been able to run the camps in every school holidays over recent years. Rangatahi Tumeke is a program developed for youth to help them reconnect to their Māori culture, self-identity and the environment. This allows them to become confident leaders and positive contributors to society now and in the future. These camps have been running for five years and all Rangatahi have remained fully funded. We would like to keep it this way to ensure there are no barriers for whānau. We also offer corporate/business camps which aim to increase the engagement and participation of our community members, through authentic cultural experiences in a safe and friendly outdoor environment. It is so important in today's multicultural society to have the understanding and compassion for all cultures. We have created a valuable and unique opportunity for businesses and organisations to become active, aware and empowered through cultural, outdoor and team building experiences. This is over a two to three day wānanga in the heart of the Caitlins with our team of experienced and dedicated whānau.
